SAFE BOATING AWARENESS WEEK
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Across North America, major boating organizations are gearing up to promote
safe boating during this annual event: May 20 - 26, 2006.
In Canada, the Canadian Safe Boating Council teams up with the
Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons, whose volunteers blanket the media
with information about safe boating practices. CPS squadrons in many areas
offer special short courses during this period and help to emphasize the
wearing of life jackets.

Awareness of safe boating habits is reducing fatalities:
In the US, the National Safe Boating Council reports that In 2004, the
United States Coast Guard recorded the lowest number of recreational boating
fatalities in the history of the statistics.

DISPOSING OF OUT-DATED FLARES?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The law requires that you carry current-dated flares in the correct combination
of types for your particular vessel. What the law doesn't tell you, is what to
do
with out-dated flares. It's against the law to simply shoot them off - even
flare
demonstrations are now illegal in most jurisdictions.
If you live in the Greater Toronto area - you are in luck. During Safe Boating
Awareness Week, Lori Mason and her staff at The Store in Port Credit, are
offering to take the old flares off your hands. They also have demonstrations
of proper flare use via a CPS Distress Signaling DVD, you can try on various
types of PFDs and review MOB (Man Overboard) drills.

FREE VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons, United States Power Squadrons and
Coast Guard Auxiliaries in both countries provide free vessel safety checks
at your marina or yacht club.
The lack of proper equipment on your vessel can cost you dearly, whether
getting into danger without the tools that will save your life, or actually cost
you
in dollar terms when the law officer finds your inventory lacking. Either way,
a free check is a smart move.
