![]() After sailing from Ceuta on the North African coast, we arrived in Duquesa on Spain's Costa del Sol which means Sun Coast, in the south, on the Mediterranean shore. |
![]() Here we met up with friends, Stuart and Teresa Watkins of Gibraltar, who took us to a tapas bar to try traditional Spanish cured ham. It was a bit strange to go into a bar and see all the legs of ham, hoof intact, hanging from the ceiling. But the "jamon", was delicious! The proprietor sliced it very thinly and served it to us on little pieces of fresh Spanish bread and we sipped the local sherry as we ate it. |

![]() Stuart and Teresa introduced us to Chris Wahl a historical geographer, who led us all up into the Spanish hills to search for Roman ruins. After hours of bush-wacking, we arrived at the site of the ancient mountain top village of Saepo. |
![]() From Duquesa, we sailed east along the Costa del Sol. We had a lovely downwind day sail, sailing wing and wing as we went. |

Approaching Marina del Este |
We arrived at Marina del Este, where there is both an anchorage and beautiful little marina. Francesco, the harbor master, shared his paella recipe with me. For the recipe, click here. |

![]() At Marina del Este, we rented a car and drove up into the Sierra Nevada mountain range. What a view! |

| By chance, we drove through the little town of Villardompardo where they were holding a weekend festival for Corpus Cristi. They invited us to stay and on the Saturday we helped decorate the streets with flowers, then participated in the procession on Sunday morning. It was very moving to walk through the little narrow streets to the sound of drums, and the scent of warm flowers and incense. | ||||
