Part 3 - Outfitting

Storing Items on Deck

As mentioned earlier, we have substantially reduced the clutter on Two-Step's deck. She is a safer boat now and handles better, but we do still keep some things on deck. Following is the list of gear we store on deck:

Table 2 - On Deck  Storage

Items                                        Comments

life raft

Lashed on deck.

dinghy

Almost essential. Ours (and 80% of long-term cruisers) is inflatable but you'll never convince the other group to switch. We store it inflated and lashed down in front of the mast for immediate use in an emergency.

outboard

We like the freedom of exploring in the dinghy so we got an 8 HP engine to allow the dinghy to plane.

barbecue

A nice option. It keeps the heat outside when cooking on a hot day.

boat hooks

An 8’ one and a 6’ one.

5 gal. water jugs

We carry two 5-gallon plastic jugs of water on deck only on offshore passages. It’s extra water and could be grabbed in an emergency.
