Transiting the Erie Canal

Pretty lockThe locks are all historical buildings in very pretty settings. The lock operators take great pride in their locks and compete for best garden, etc. You will often see them out polishing and painting and, if you ask, they are usually happy to give you a tour. After the hectic months of preparation for the voyage south, the transit through the Oswego and Erie Canals is a relaxing trip in protected waters.
There are many places to tie up for the night along the canal. Old commercial terminals have been converted for use by recreational boaters and have clean showers and power hook-ups. Some towns along the way have docks you can tie to for the night or in some cases provide a courtesy dock for a few hours so you can walk to town for shopping before heading to the next lock.At town wall
