The Shellbacks of Toronto
We Shellbacks, “ being in all respects ready for sea…”
Are young, less young; experienced, and less experienced; male and female, yet
all eager to learn and share and fellowship.The Shellback Club invites you to
attend the weekly nautical presentation and lunch.
Since 1934, this Club has presented a wide variety of nautical topics to
those interested in sailing, voyages, sea adventures, maritime history, seaport
history, yacht design and other similar matters.
The only qualifications for Membership are attendance and interest in things
nautical. There are no annual dues or fees to enjoy the company and the
presentations
Place: Royal Canadian Yacht Club- 145 St. George Street.
(Just north of Bloor Street)
Dates: Every Wednesday starting October 18, 2006 to April 18, 2007
Time: Lunch 1200 hours – 1330 hours.
Arrive after 1130 at the front door and ask for Shellbacks.
Cost: Lunch $14.00.
To support the Shellback charities, a contribution of $2.00 to the “ Dory” is
requested.
Other beverages are available.
Program
The Winter / Spring season ends April 16, 2008. Make plans
to come to this exciting line-up of speakers - something for every interest.
March 5. Arthur English: As captain, owner and with a Canadian crew, his
C&C 41'- Temagami - finished 3rd in Class and 1st Foreign Boat in the 2006
Newport Bermuda Race- the Centennial Race with 265 participants. In the same
2002 event,Temagami finished 4th in Class and 1st Foreign Boat. Arthur has also
raced / cruised and sailed extensively- Vic Maui Race - ARC Atlantic crossing
and other Atlantic crossings. He will discuss the logistics of doing the race
from Toronto and will bring a video to show parts of the race.
March 12. Taylor Echlin was aboard the Norwegian Cruise Ship M.S.
Nordnorge that answered the distress call from M.S. Explorer in Antarctic waters
last November. Read his exciting account and graphic pictures that are on his
web site. Google "Taylor Echlin" for Canada and look for his account.
March 19. Phil Manuel has completed 6 freighter trips to and from almost
everywhere. He is coming to tell us about his adventures and to give us the
inside story as to how to find the right trip / the costs / the food / and the
unexpected. Come with questions!
March 26. Ken Deeley always has a fabulous collection of sailing pictures
and will include the Fastnet pictures from last year and the Rolex 2007 Year of
Racing.
April 2. Cliff Simon is one of Canada's most skilful carvers of yacht
models. For over 25 years he has converted nautical drawings and lines, pictures
and memories to models. Many of the models in the Model Room at RCYC have had
his professional touch. Learn how all this happens! Bring a young person
interested in models - of boats.
April 9. Aubrey and Judy Millard of the yacht Veleda IV - all being well-
will have returned from one of their cruises and will bring us up to date on
their travels and their new book , if it is finished - " Living the Dream- the
Cruising Life". Always a special treat to see them.
April 16. Lorne Joyce. His talk is titled "Yesterdays Boats - the Many
Variations of Earlier Craft". His family - for 4 generations- were Lake Ontario
fishermen. He has selected a series of pictures that show the incredible variety
of ships and boats that were part of the maritime scene - back into the 1800's
and 1900's. Having had a sneak preview, this is a presentation that must not be
missed.
Shellbacks welcomes all who have ( or even might have) and interest in maritime
topics. Bring along a friend, a neighbour, a relative - anyone who might share
our common interests.
The Wednesday weather has been unkindly but we can overcome by coming to the
rest of the Season!
