Cobourg, Ontario, September 10, 2006 The rain showers passed over and the sun broke through, as Canada's first Open 60 racer got her bottom wet at Cobourg's (Ontario) Heritage Harbour. A large and enthusiastic crowd watched nervously as Derek Hatfield and his crew gently raised the vessel from her flatbed truck and swung her over the wharf and into the waters of Lake Ontario. Lacking her keel, Spirit floated high, looking for all the world like a 60-foot Laser! A thing of beauty, indeed. Spirit will be Canada's entry in the vaunted Vendee Globe in 2008 - a solo, non-stop race around the globe. http://www.spiritofcanada.net/ [ Back to archives ] |
