The World Cruise of Veleda IV

VELEDA'S VOYAGE

Judy and Aubrey have been living on their boat VELEDA IV, an Ontario 32, and have sailed over 14,600 nautical miles, since leaving Toronto in July 1998. Their voyage so far has taken them through all the Great Lakes, down the Mississippi and Ten-Tom Waterway, through the Everglades, the Florida Keys, the Dry Tortugas, over to Cuba, the Bahamas for their first winter, and across the Atlantic in the spring via Bermuda and the Azores, to Falmouth, England. After spending the summer on the English south and east coasts, they wintered in Limehouse Basin in the Docklands of London.

Since leaving London they have sailed through the Dutch canals, around the Frisian Islands, through the Keil Canal to the Baltic, and among the Danish islands. After Copenhagen and Helsingborg in Sweden, they crossed the Kattegat to the Limfjord Canal across the Jutland Peninsula to the North Sea. From there they touched the south coast fjords of Norway, then across the North Sea to the Moray Firth. From Inverness they went through the Caledonian Canal, through Loch Ness and over to the west coast Scottish Highlands. They sailed up through the Sound of Mull, past the peninsulas of Ardnamurchan, Moidart, and Knoydart, the Isle of Skye up to the Hebrides to Stornoway, then south again and, by way of the Crinan Canal, to the Firth of Clyde.

From there they proceeded down the Irish Sea, stopping in Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Anglesey, and South Wales en route to the Scillies and the Channel Islands. They entered France at Honfleur and went up the Seine to Paris, then the Marne, the canal system to the Saone, and down the Saone to Lyon and the Rhone to the Mediterranean. They are currently in Barcelona, Spain, the start of an anticipated two years or so in the Mediterranean.

They are sending out periodic logs of their experiences and would welcome interest from other boaters or organizations that might wish to contact them or be added to their mailing list. They can be reached via E-mail at <veledaiv@aol.com>, or through Judy's father Henry Shykoff in Toronto at (416) 421-2668. They would be pleased to hear from interested cruisers.

Aubrey started sailing dinghies in the late 1950's when an officer cadet in the Canadian Navy. Continuing with the navy he earned his bridge watchkeeper's certificate and reached the rank of lieutenant commander, in addition to qualifying as a Clearance Diving Officer.

Recreationally, he has continued sailing since, along the way picking up additional sailing qualifications including an offshore skipper's certificate from the British Kiel Yacht Club in Germany, the Canadian Yachting Association's Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Cruising Standards, Coastal Navigation Standard and Basic Cruising Instructor's certificate, and the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron's Offshore Cruising certificate. He has taught for the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron, and has held the position of Commodore with the Royal Canadian Navy Sailing Association (now the Canadian Forces Sailing Association) at HMCS York in Toronto, and with his home yacht club, the
Toronto Hydroplane and Sailing Club

He is fortunate that his wife Judy, also a qualified diver, is interested in sailing, starting in dinghies in 1964. She is well qualified, with the same Canadian Yachting Association courses and a Canadian Power and Sail Squadron full certificate, and she has instructed CPSS courses for many years.

They both hold the
Great Lakes Cruising Club Admiral Bayfield Award (for over 5000 miles cruising all the Great Lakes), and are Commodores with the Seven Seas Cruising Association as well as members of the Cruising Association in Great Britain.

We'll insert log updates from Veleda IV as they arrive.
