Safe in Antigua

Written at: English Harbour, Antigua Feb. 16, 2006

Hi Folks,

Just a short note to say we have arrived safely in Antigua after an interesting, challenging, fast crossing, from Mindelo in the Cape Verdes to English Harbour, a distance of 2196 nautical miles in only 16 days. The Trade Winds blew constantly from 15 to 25 knots most of the time. There were no real storms, and only a few times when the wind gusted up to 45 knots, not as heavy as our sail from the Canaries to the Cape Verdes. Judy was OK this trip, the scopolamine patches worked well, but she was not able to do much below deck work. I did all the cooking, and washing up, although Judy was able to sit in the cockpit to dry the dishes. She owes me two weeks of total domesticity.

Another highlight of the passage was that I caught three large fish, two tuna and a Dorado (Mahi Mahi). We had two lunches of sashimi (raw fish with wasabi, soya sauce, and ginger slices) and six main meals of cooked fish. Mmmm! For those of you receiving pictures, I have attached one of me with the Dorado. Judy did a good job of cleaning and filleting the fish.

I will send more detailed logs of our passage. Here in Antigua the weather is warm and sunny, with afternoon temperatures around 28 degrees C (85 F.?), going down to 23 at night. The anchorage is well sheltered from the ocean surge, and allows the fresh trade winds to blow across keeping the temperature comfortable. We have all the facilities we need here in English Harbour, including Nelson’s Dockyard, internet access, chandleries, book exchanges (Judy has read all the books on board, going through 28 of them on passage), dive shops, grocery stores, and all kinds of restaurants. The costs are high, and so we will not be eating out very much. We will be here a week or two, just lazing around doing odd jobs, swimming, beach combing, and relaxing.
